For our stock removal 2" x 72" sanding belts for knife making and metal fabricating we offer our premium ceramic #shredder material and a premium zirconia with a grinding aid. These materials are offered in the coarse grits such as 24 grit, 36 grit, 40 grit, 60 grit, 80 grit & 120 grit. These materials will remove stock of aluminum, stainless steel and steel in a HURRY. Ceramic #shredder is by far the best option here as this is the newest technology in sanding & grinding. Typically people use zirconia who are on a budget.
WHAT IS STOCK REMOVAL?
Stock Removal is one of the methods used to create a basic blade shape. Stock removal involves cutting and sanding away parts of a steel or metal blank to a desired shape and size. Ceramic sanding belts are the fastest and most cost effective way to remove stock when grinding steel and stainless steel.
What are ceramic shredder belts?
2" x 72" Ceramic Shredder belts come in an orange/reddish color, typical of ceramic grains. The grain structure of these belts provides continuous renewal of the most consistent and uniform cutting edges. The nature of ceramic grain allows for faster cutting and cooler stock removal. They are adhered to a Y-Weight Polyester backing. A material's backing thickness (related to its flexibility) is categorized by the alphabet. Backings closer or rated as 'A' are substantially more flexible than the stiffest 'Y' weight backing you'll find on our site. Backings with an 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D', 'E', or 'F' backing are all considered paper backings. 'E' and 'F' weight backings are typically used to make belts as they are the most durable paper backings available (typically found in the wood industry) though still much less durable/thick than the full or partial synthetic backings like an 'X' or 'Y' weight. Typically various 'X' and 'Y' weight backings are used in metal working as the standard. Y weights are very sturdy and typically full synthetic polyester materials versus some 'X' weights often being a cotton-poly blend material to allow for greater flexibility. J Flex refers to an even greater flexible backing material that is often used without a contact wheel and some slack in the belt so it can softly contour rounder shapes (e.g. a wooden handle). It's important to note that our shredder sanding beltscan be ran WET in grits 24, 36, 40, 60, 80 & 120. The ceramic J-flex belts because of their backing, cannot be ran in wet applications.
Should I buy ceramic or zirconia belts? Which is better?
2" x 72" sanding belts for stock removal can be used in both zirconia or ceramic although the ceramic belts are FAR superior in every category. Traditionally knifemakers used to use zirconia sanding belts for the stock removal process but since the advent of the newer technology "ceramic" abrasive grain, the market has almost entirely gone to ceramic. This is for a variety of reasons, while you only pay about 30-40% more for ceramic VS zirconia, it is still a tremendous value due to to the 60% increase in cutting speed, 2-3X the longevity and life of the belt and lastly the ceramic belt stays cooler for much longer. If you are simply looking to spend the least amount of money per belt and feel that you won't get the full wear out of the belt, zirconia is a good option. If you are using these belts to their full grinding, sanding & finishing capabilities, the answer is 100% ceramic!
How are ceramic sanding belts made?
Why 2" x 72" Sanding Belts?
2" x 72" sanding belts offer the best middle ground between heavy duty grinding and finer detail work blades can take—e.g. sharpening or detailed handle work. This makes the 2" x 72" size the most common belt size for knife making for profiling, bevel grinding, detailed edge sanding, and sharpening.
Which 2" x 72" sanding belt should i get?
Combat Abrasives offers several options for 2" x 72" belts. These stock removal belts are the most aggressive belts we offer and are recommended to quickly prepare a blank or a custom forged piece to the shape required. Honestly, we recommend our Ceramic Shredder line here—it's geared towards long life and high performance without breaking down to heat. Our Ceramic J-Flex (available in 220 grit) offers a quick performing ceramic belt that is extremely flexible. Great for using on harder material for handles for example.
These leather strops are used with polishing compound to finish the sharpening and edge of the knife. Typically these belts last a very long time and most knife makers only have one for each type of compound they finish with—often settling on one single compound and belt to finish their edge.
What grinders are common for 2" x 72" sanding belts
Common machines our customers use, though this is not an endorsement necessarily, are the Wilton Square Wheel Grinder, The Burr King 972 Knifemaker Grinder, The Hardcore Belt Grinder, the Bader Bill, the Bob Dozier, Grinder, and the AMK 2" x 72" Grinder (which we are partial to).
What is the best sanding belt for sanding steel or stainless steel?
Ceramic sanding belts are bar far the best type of abrasive to use when cutting any type of steel or stainless steel. Our revolutionary ceramic grain and resin coating technology provides the best performance in cutting, shaping and long lasting performance. As our triangular shaped abrasive grain wears, it continuously fractures...forming new sharp points and edges that effortlessly cut through the hardest steels. Our #shredder ceramic sanding belts provide the longest life and consistent grain finish at any grinding pressure.
Best belts I have used and they last longer than other brands making them a good value.
ABSOLUTELY the best stock removal tool ever !!!
Faster than any abrasive I have ever tried.
These Shredder belts are the Best by far. Great lines and long lasting with very little heat buildup
All is good. Thank you for your product. Have a great day.
Love my Combat Abrasive belts!
It really cuts through the material quickly and they last a long time.
These belts are far more efficient with a reasonable price point In comparison to what I normally buy. Even at 120-grit the ceramic shredder is just amazing at cleaning, shaping, and finishing my work for heat treat. I'd be happy to try more for my social media if there's a deal in the works somewhere.
It's OK. Took Metal off fairly quickly, but wore out sooner than expected.
Great product as always!!!
Belts are always true with a great edge. Lasts longer than anything else I've tried.
As always, Combat Abrasive belts are exemplary. We just built our first 2x72 grinder and are loving the performance.
Delivery was quick and complete.
I have nothing but good things to say about Combat Abrasives.
Great customer service.
Great product, great service, and fast!
I used to use the cheap Amazon belts and was looking for something American made that was good quality. I have been very impressed with what I have been able to do with Combat Abrasives. The belt life on their stuff is amazing and it is all I will be buying as long as I am making knives.
I love your products, but I ordered 72" belts and needed 42" belts, my fault. I will place another ỏder soon. Thank You.
have been using these belts for about 2 years now. very happy with life of them
These belts save a lot of time and effort and last a lot longer than any other belt I've tried.
Stop wasting your time and buy these!
I have gone through many manufactures of 2x72 belts and the king is the ceramics by 3M. Not only do they shred metal but they last quite a while. For me it does seem though that they cut very well and then all of a sudden stop. It might be that the cutting surfaces wear so well that they all wear down at the same time but that has been my experience. I use the 36 grit mostly for profiling (slightly used belt) to grinding the bevels (new to slightly new). I can grind bevels on my camp choppers (1/4" spine and 11 1/2" cutting edge) and get about 4 knives done before I start to see a real slow down in metal removal. 4 of my choppers are more like about 10 hunting blades and who knows how many smaller EDC blades. I have tried some other shredding type belts but they don't come close. Even tried one that a prominent Youtube knife maker suggested and when I got the belt it was cracked in different places and the cutting surfaces basically broke down after just one chopper blade. 3M Cubitron is all I will use for the first process of knife making.
Are the absolute best out there!!
Excellent belts I will make Combat Abrasives my go to.
Fabulous belts... Great company with excellent order turnaround...
haven't used yet
just got machine. haven't used yet.
I bought it for my father and we both were amazed on how well it worked. Definitely going to buy more & different grits. Great product.
Best belts ever!!!
Best stock removal belt I have used!
Held up well, used it almost all day and still going.
Smooth finish and great stock removal
Perfect for what I needed
THEY WORK GREAT, HAVE CUT DOWN MY GRIND TIME CONSIDERABLY AND LAST LONGER THAN OLD BELTS.
Need metal ground away fast? Look no further. This thing is a beast
My order took seven days. Would appreciate the next order to go out same day. Thank u
Sorry! I bought your products on merit alone due to word of mouth and YouTube. I’m a newbie in the knife world, built my own Housework’s 2 x72, and in process of getting things set up!
Serious material remover
put a great flat spot on my thumb very quickly!! seriously, this is probably the best grinding belt i have seen
This is my new fighter design that I just finished grinding with a Combat Abrasives 36 grit. These belts are outstanding, fast cutting and long lasting. NSDQ!
36 grit is the bomb. Super fast stock removal and superb life. Love these belts!
I bought these 24 grit for rapid stock removal, we are grinding saddles into pipe for cattle fencing. While the belts work fine, we have found the 36 grit to be better for this application than the 24 grit. Belts are great, just not the best belt for this project. I'll be using the 36 grit for this activity going forward.
Best belts I’ve used.
I do all of my knife bevel grinding post heat treat and these belts are excellent at stock removal and run cool. I use mist cooling when hogging and these belts in 36-80-120 grits are good performers. For their price point they last pretty well. I will re order.
Looks good but does not last long at all and I've only used then a few times.
EXCELLANT BELT FOR REMOVING FORGE SCALE
GREAT BELTS, REMOVES MATERIAL FAST WITHOUT OVERHEATING.
I’m very impressed so far!
Great belts that last forever. I even got a few stickers in the box too, I appreciate that sort of box candy. Thanks much!
Excellent wear and durability!
Excellent wear and durability.
These belts do the job and seem to hold up better than other belts l have used.
Blasting through these Ikejime spikes!
These shredder 36s are beastly and last twice as long as my normal line up! Definitely making them part of my full time Arsenal.
I made 3 knives with one belt and it still has some life left in it. These are the best belts I have ever used.
Didn't last very long
The more I use these belts the better I like them. They track straight and last a long time.
Nice belts, run smooth and while I haven't used it much yet, they seem to hole up well.
Great product! Belts are amazing
Great sanding belts. These belts eat through all kinds of steel.
Definitely my go to stock removal belts!!!
Completely satisfied with this product. Will buy again
Completely satisfied with this product. Will buy again when needed
Great value for the belt price
Great belts, great price.
Great belts they are probably the best you can find! I get a lot of work done with just 1 of these belts, around a week of 8 hr days.
Love these belts, cheap and remove material fast and last a good amount of time.
I have cut my time in have to finish a knife love your product
More efficient than any belt I've used before.......Time saved offsets cost.
These belts work awesome.
We grind mostly high speed steel and the ceramic belts are the only thing that works and holds up over time.
Everything showed up in very good condition. This was my first experience with the Trizac belts. They
work great. Thank you.
Great belt and quality
Setting up shredders with the surface grinder is a huge time saver for making my Damascus billet
If you're a serious metal worker that requires belt grinder type stock removal through the polishing process, ...... You won't find a better belt,.....cheaper, but not better.
Love all the products
I like the durability of this belta, thank you !
Makes short work of the profiling of this blade after forging
Love it great product the only thing is in shipping didn't say about duty fees paid extra $38 for Canada shipping

Absolutely eats material. This has cut my profile grinding time dramatically. Not sure about longevity but it seems like it will last.
I've been running a 2x72 belt grinder for the better part of 12 years. The belts from combat abrasives are hands down the best bang for your buck. The 36g ceramic shredders love up to their name. They are ridiculous. I recently did my rough bevel grind on over 2 blades ( 18-22 swords) so 4 bevels per blade on one belt.
Awesome belt takes off material without overheating.
I’m 100% happy with combat abrasives products. The shredders are absolute monsters! Steel eating monsters! That being said, the shipping times are terrible. A week and a half to even get a tracking number? I love me some combat abrasives but there are times spending the extra money somewhere else doesn’t sound too bad to get my belts in a timely manner. Other than that, I’d recommend them to anyone that asks.
Great belts. Great prices. Great service.
Wow, these 24 grit belts are just what you'd probably expect... Absolute shredders!! Talk about effortless stock removal.
These belts make stock removal on large blades much easier.
