The last step before shaving sharp
A leather belt loaded with polishing compound is how a ground edge becomes a finished one: it aligns and polishes the apex after your finest abrasive belt, and puts the final pop on a honed edge.
Because the leather carries the compound (the compound does the cutting), these belts last a very long time — most knifemakers dedicate one belt to one compound and finish every edge on it.

Suitability
What is the leather belt for?
Use it for
- Stropping edges after your finest belt (with compound)
- Final polish on honed edges
- Fine polishing of shaped metal
Not the right belt for
- Any material removal — it isn’t an abrasive belt
- Running dry — it needs compound to work
- Coarse cleanup or shaping of any kind
How to strop on a belt grinder
1. Load the belt with your chosen polishing compound — a light, even coat.
2. Run slow. Stropping wants low belt speed and a light touch.
3. Edge trailing, always. The edge points away from the belt’s direction of travel — never into it.
4. Alternate sides lightly until the edge pops.
5. Re-load compound as the surface dries out; dedicate the belt to one compound for consistent results.
Technical details
Good to know
Compounds embed in the leather, so mixing them on one belt muddies the finish. Most makers settle on a single compound and belt for their final edge.
Standard 2″ x 72″ size — fits the same grinders as the rest of this family.
Even at low speed, keep the edge trailing and wear eye protection.

Questions
Leather belt FAQs
Do I need compound?
Yes — the compound does the polishing; the leather carries it. Pair it with our polishing compound for buffing wheels.
Will it fit my grinder?
Standard 2″ x 72″ — same fit as every belt in this family.
How long does it last?
Years, typically. The leather isn’t consumed like an abrasive — most makers keep one per compound.
Which direction do I strop?
Edge trailing — the edge points away from belt travel, at low speed with light pressure.
Can it replace my finishing belts?
No — it refines and polishes an edge that’s already been taken through the grit sequence.
