Why aluminum oxide for finishing?
Past roughly 120 grit, expensive ceramic and zirconia grains stop earning their premium — heat and durability demands drop, so aluminum oxide delivers the same finish for a fraction of the price. That makes these A/O belts the smart way to run out the grit sequence after your ceramic stock-removal belts have done the heavy lifting.
From 36 grit shaping to an 800 grit pre-polish, this is the range where bevels get cleaned up, scratch patterns get erased grit by grit, and edges get ready for the strop.

All three run the same aluminum-oxide grain — the backing changes how the belt behaves.

Come off your ceramic stock-removal belts at 120 grit, then work up this range without skipping more than one step.
36–60 grit
Shaping and cleanup where you don’t need ceramic’s cut rate — softer metals, wood, general shop work.
80–120 grit
Refining bevels and blending scratch patterns after stock removal.
150–220 grit
True finishing begins — hand-sand replacement on flats and bevels.
320–400 grit
Fine finish; where many working knives stop before the strop.

Running the grit sequence right
1. Don’t skip grits. Jumping from 36 to 120 destroys the 120 belt and burns the finish — step 36 → 60 → 80 → 120 and beyond, one or two steps at a time.
2. Lighten pressure as grits get finer. Fine belts finish; they don’t remove.
3. Switch to J-Flex with slack for handles and curves — run it off the platen.
4. Watch the scratch pattern: move to the next grit only when the previous grit’s scratches are gone.
5. Replace when cut rate drops or the belt burnishes instead of cutting.

Backings, grain choice, and machine fit.
X-weight is a sturdy cotton-poly cloth — the metalworking standard for platen work. J-weight is thinner and more flexible. J-Flex is the most flexible class, made to run with slack so it contours rounded shapes like handles.
Ceramic grain earns its price in coarse, high-heat stock removal. At finer grits there’s little heat to fight, so aluminum oxide gives the same finish at far lower cost — which is why our finishing line is A/O and our stock-removal line is ceramic.
Standard 2″ x 72″ belts for machines like the Burr King 972, Bader, Wilton Square Wheel, AMK and Ameribrade grinders. Confirm your grinder’s spec lists 2″ x 72″ before ordering.
Grinding produces fine dust and sparks. Wear eye protection and a properly rated respirator, and follow your grinder manufacturer’s guidance. We recommend a full-face respirator like this one on Amazon.

Will these fit my grinder?
They’re standard 2″ x 72″ belts — the most common knife-grinder size. Check that your machine’s spec lists 2″ x 72″ before ordering.
Which backing should I choose?
X-weight for platen and contact-wheel finishing. J-Flex for slack-belt handle and contour work. J-weight is the budget option when in stock.
Which grit do I start with?
Pick up where your stock-removal belts left off — usually 150–220 after finishing at 120 on ceramic — then step up without skipping more than one grit.
Why is a grit showing as unavailable?
The picker reflects live stock. Some J-weight and X-weight grits sell out; unavailable combinations can’t be added to cart.

The best most lasting belts out there
The finishing belts do their job well, puts a razor edge on a blade! Becareful about storage though, the finer belts have a tendency to fold when the humidity is bad and the belt edges gouge into the surface of what you're grinding.

I’m trying to use up the crap belts I already had. I’ve only used the 400 grit from Combat and it was good! Check back with me in a few weeks when i really get to using them.

Would be extremely nice to have a 220 grit in 2"x72" belt / CERAMIC SHREDDER.. would you all consider this. The sanding belts in Maverick don't seem tp hold up long. Thanks, Best Regards

I completed final finish sanding with Combat Abrasives belt on the War Steel Leon Fighter. This knife is made from my minigun barrels and WTC steel.
Been using combat abrasives for over a year. Pretty much the only vendor I buy belts from. I've used the ceramic belt for clean up after forging. Polishing and buffing belts for finishing touches. I've also just recently started using the scalloped belts for fiber well clean up and for my integrals. They make like much easier. Used the sheets for hand sanding as well. Never had a problem with anything. I am pleased with the quality of the product and that it's a small business not some corporation.
